Review by k_silber : Great Travel Player for the Price
We have had this for about a month and our 2-year old carries it around the house in addition to playing it in the car. Ours has a great battery life so far and he has watched it for over 5-Hours on one battery charge. His carseat is in the middle of the back of our small car which prevents us from mounting it on one of the front seats, so he must hold the player to watch it. He has dropped it several times and it just keeps on playing. Video is fine for for kids, but not HD by any means. Only thing that I don't like about it is that you must remove it from the carrier to change the DVD.
Review by G. Arnold : sturdy, cost-effective, multi-region portable player
Purchased 6/2010 on Amazon. Price was similar to the older model (TFDVD7051) so I figured I'd get the new one. Since we own several non-US DVDs, I realized the risk of getting a recent model with unknown capabilities, but Coby has a solid reputation for dependable region hacks... although it took a while to figure out the right combination for this one (all key presses done with the supplied remote):
1. Turn on the player
2. Press: Setup
3. Press: Next (>>|), Prev (|<<), FF (>>), FR(<<)
4. Should get a screen with (useless) debug information
5. Press: Zoom
6. Should get a detailed debug/configuration screen, including firmware and codec revisions. Region code appears on the top right. Use the up/down arrow keys to select a different region, or 255 for region free. Voila!
It also reads PAL discs without a problem (no further setup necessary). Otherwise it has the ordinary features you'd expect of a small portable player. Extras include dual headphone jacks, coaxial output and a fitted headrest mount. Volume on built-in speakers is loud and clear, although the volume dial could be more sensitive. Works for me, so far so good!
UPDATE 8/17/10: recently returned form a long road trip. Player proved durable, delivered good quality video and audio (built-in speakers as well as headphones) and battery life was exceptionally good. Minor complaints: (a) the headrest mount design forces you to take out the whole unit in order to change the disc, could be done better; (b) aspect ratio preference is not determined automatically (defaults to 16:9) and is not memorized between power cycles when set manually, an annoyance; (c) volume controlled by a small mechanical wheel, not very sensitive and (obviously) cannot be set through the remote. Again, these are all acceptable traits for this type of devices, especially at this price range. In all other senses, it has been a pleasant surprise. Coby has gained my trust as a manufacturer of good quality portable DVD players.
Review by Dr Phill : Works Fine
Bought this a couple of months ago for my 3 yr old on long trips. Happy with the purchase. Good picture quality, okay sound, reasonable battery life so far. I like the design in that it is a flat design (similar to iPad for the lack of a better analogy, though not really). As opposed to a laptop style design, because those designs have to be more vulnerable to breaking from toddlers. Just my opinion though, I haven't done any experiments.I lost the remote in the first few days, so can't comment if it would've been useful. I never used it and don't miss it.The biggest unknown is how long will it last. I looked at some of the other Coby DVD players and some of the reviewers complained about the short life.If it breaks down within a year, I'll try to come back and update this review.Update Apr 26, 2011: Still going strong.
Update Sep 24, 2011: We recently started using this as a DVD player for our home TV as well. I have to say it's pretty good quality. Overall a very satisfied customer.
Review by Hal : Great DVD player for the car
We bought 3 of these Coby Portable Tablet DVD players for our 3 row SUV. We have two on the second row (attached to the front seat headrests) and one for the 3rd row. This product is extremely versatile because you can watch a different DVD on each unit OR you can connect them so that all show the movie from the "master" unit. It's so easy to set up and to switch the modes. The included headrest attachments work better than any other we've tried. These are made of sturdy canvas and have lengthy straps. We actually looped the straps around the headrest supports instead of around the headrest itself which makes for a cleaner-looking installation. You can easily remove the DVD players from the headrest attachments with just one pull of the velcro strap and disconnecting a couple of wires. The built-in speakers work great or each unit has TWO headset connections. These DVD players also have an internal battery AND a built-in stand, so you can take it inside and watch it while it's sitting on a table or other flat surface. The picture (screen) quality is very clear and the controls are easy to use. We haven't even needed to use the included remote control as you can do everything from the buttons on the front of the unit.
The only downside that we have found is that to change the DVD you have to remove the unit from the headrest attachment, so it's almost impossible to do that "on the go". Not a big deal as we just change DVDs when it's time to stop for gas or food. A mitigating factor however is that since you can set the units to display the output of another device, it's easy to use an iPod to drive the video, so the iPod can be loaded up with videos and in the front seat area controlled by the adults. Problem solved. Overall for the price, we couldn't be happier with these DVD players!
Review by Noname : Terrific for travel
We have owned quite a few portable DVD players. Normally, we use them on trips for the children. On this last trip, we decided to splurge on these Coby tablet DVD players. The DVD players fit into sleeves, which have cutouts for the screen and controls. Buckle straps attach the sleeves to the headrests. This is an easier process than attaching standard DVD cases to headrests. The sleeve design makes it more difficult for the children to access the DVD's in the player -- a positive, if your children are very young but a negative, if you have slightly older children who would normally be able to change the DVD on their own. It's not impossible to do, just inconvenient. The player can be controlled from buttons on the front, but it's easier to do with the included remote (which comes with batteries). Volume must be controlled via a wheel on on the side of the player. Picture quality is very good, rich and vibrant, even when viewing from different angles. Sound is fine at home. In the car, the sound can sometimes be drowned out by the white noise of the road and other background noise. Headphone jacks and earphones are included. Sound quality through headphones is excellent. The back of the DVD player has a pull-out stand, in case you want to set it on the table for viewing. We tried that and it worked very well. The DVD player has a battery so it can be played without the need for an outlet. It also comes with plugs for the wall and car outlets. So far, so good. We are very happy with our choice and would buy these players all over again. PROS: + case straps easily to headrest + includes remote with batteries + includes earphones + picture quality is very good + includes stand + comes with AC and DC power cords CONS: - inconvenient to change DVD's when mounted on headrest - sound can be drowned out by the noise in the car
Review by David M. Noonan : Exceeded Expectations
I bought two of these in order to entertain 3 children on an upcoming 3 hour road trip. I liked how the DVD player was able to attach to the back of our minivan's headrests and not impede the path in and out of the sliding doors. The tablet format of this model versus a standard laptop format of other models worked best for me.
I plugged the players in via the included AC cord and a DC/AC converter that I already had in the minivan. I used a power strip to allow for multiple plugs (I needed 2) and also to allow the players to plug in under the console between the two front seats. This alleviated the need for a Y-adapter for the cigarette plug and also the need to stretch the power cords all the way to the front. Advertising the cord lengths would be a great feature for each manufacturer, as I suspect that each buyer's application could be different.
The item description does not talk about playing one movie on two players (because they aren't sold as a set of DVD players, only one DVD player or a DVD player and monitor combo TFDVD7752); however, each player comes with a cord that outputs the audio and video from two mini plugs to your standard red, white, and yellow RCA plugs. The players have a switch on the side for input or output, so I bought a triple RCA coupler at Radio Shack, plugged in each cord's RCA plugs to the coupler, and can now watch one DVD on both players by switching one player to "output" and the other player to "input". These plugs are in addition to the two headphone plugs that each unit has.
Another feature that I like is that each DVD player comes with a battery (+2 hours worth). This will come in handy when traveling on a plane where there is no power outlet. Most dual players don't come with a battery, which makes them useful for only automobile applications when the automobile is on. I haven't had them long enough to know exactly how long the battery life is per charge.
The screen size of 7" is plenty large enough when sitting in the car and viewing on the headrest in front of you. The LCD screen is bright and I found the picture resolution to be very good. I didn't see any pixelation that was referred to in another review. When the earbuds (included) are plugged in, the external speakers are muted (a very parent-friendly feature). Each DVD player has 2 headphone plugs. Younger kids may require cushioned headphones instead of the included earbuds.
Overall, my purchase of two of these DVD players has been very positive.
Review by JP : Very Good -- Could be Better
Overall, Good, but I may have purchased something else if I could do it again -- I may return it for something else.
(Note: I am a fairly critical consumer.)
Pros:
* Awesome tablet format, mounts in cars easily using mounting jacket
* DVD's look good on the TFT screen
* Remote control
* Battery for truly portable viewing
* Great value for money
* Can play video from an alternate video source, like an ipod.
* Can be used as
Cons:
* You must take the DVD player out of the mounting jacket to change DVD's -- this is a pain.
* Even though the product description states "Fully Functional Remote", the remote cannot control the volume level. This is rather unfortunate. You must use a
* The power cord is somewhat short. You need to mount close to an outlet, or extend the cord.
* I wish it played divx/xvid/mpeg4 videos.
* The stand (which folds out similar to a picture frame) is fairly flimsy, although it gets the job done.
* I wish you could mount it without the mounting jacket. The unit has no strap holds or slots to mount the unit "naked". This is desirable as it would allow you to change the DVD out without having to unmount the unit or take it out of the jacket.
Review by T. Amaya : nice dvd for a plane ride
purchased this dvd player for my 2 yr old. it kept him entertained throughout the entire ride. It worked perfectly.
Review by B. Breuker "Breuks" : Great value
We bought this DVD player for a long trip so our daughter to watch videos in the car. It comes with a mounting strap for behind the headrest and it worked great. For the price that you pay, this DVD player can't be beat. It looks sharp and the quality of the picture is very good. We even used it as a CD player which worked out nicely. The battery life was impressive, we played entire movies without using the included AC adapter charger. I can't say anything about how long it last, because we just bought it. But overall it is highly recomended.
